Becoming a private tutor

Posted on January 11, 2019 at 12:25 pm

Private tutoring is often called for when parents cannot or do not want to send their child in to a school. They may want the child to be home schooled and ask that a private tutor come to the home to teach them. Private tutoring may also be used by children who want or need a little extra help with school work or by adults that want to further their education.

As a private tutor it is essential that you have great communication skills, written and oral and good IT skills. You will need to be confident and able to adapt to a way of teaching that works for your individual student.

If you are teaching a child then the parents may have strong views on what they want their child to be able to achieve. This may at times seem a little unrealistic so you need to be able to communicate with the parents in a diplomatic way. They will often want to be updated on the child’s progress and it is vital that you keep adequate notes regarding all of your teachings.

Tutoring can be very rewarding but you are often judged on the results that the pupil achieves. If you are helping a student study for exams, be sure to allow plenty of time to cover all the aspects that are needed.
