Training for employees

Posted on September 30, 2019 at 1:38 pm

As an employer it is important to look after your staff. You need to ensure that not only are they happy in their job but they also have the sufficient skills and materials they need to complete it to a high standard in a timely manner. Over times jobs often progress and new technology or new regulations come in to play which means staff have to do tasks in a different way. This is one of the reasons that staff training is so important. It may be that you are launching a new product or service and need to train staff on how to use / sell it or it may be that you are having a new point of sale system installed and need to show them how it works.

All employees should have a personalised training programme to ensure it meets their individual needs. It may be that the training required should all be done in house by a supervisor or manager or they may be required to attend a training course ra by a third party of the manufactures.

Although you as an employer may have to pay for training to be done, it should benefit the business in the long run making staff more productive and ensuring minimal mistakes are made.

Training on the job whilst still getting paid

Posted on August 16, 2019 at 1:21 pm

Some jobs allow for you to participate in training whilst you are working in a paid job position.

This can help you learn how to improve in your current role, teach you new skills and processes to allow you to take on additional responsibilities or help you manage other members of staff. You may even go on to work in a different sector of the business following on from additional training.

Often employees will be given the opportunity to go on a management courses if they are being consider for running a department or a team of people. A management course can help an employee understand how to speak to other members of the team in an authoritative but not confrontational way. It can also help them with time management, help them boost staff moral and keep track of how effectively their members of staff are working.

Very often you will not have to pay for on the job training as it will either be in house or your employer will cover the cost of external training. If you have asked to go on a specific course then they may ask you for a contribution. You may even have to sign a contract to say that you will stay with the employer for a certain period of time following the completion of the course.  If you are offered additional training it is always a good idea to take them up on the offer as it will improve your productivity in a current job but can also look great on a CV should there come a time when you wish to leave.

Is it time for a career change?

Posted on June 10, 2019 at 10:01 pm

From time to time you may decide that it’s time for a career change. This may be due to personal circumstances or it may be that you just want to do something different.

If you are not happy in your current job then it may be the perfect time for a change of career. Changing career can quite daunting especially if you have been in the same job role for a number of years. You may want to start to look for jobs that you already have the qualifications or the experience to apply for.

It may be that if you want to go in to a totally different career you need to return to education to obtain a degree or other formal qualification.

Sometimes you may need to accept a drop in salary for a while whist you train for a new role. This may not be ideal, but often you need to look at the bigger picture, as it may be that the pay drop is only temporary or that the lower stress levels and responsibility is worth taking less money.

You may be eligible for help towards student fees or help with cost of living whilst you are training.

Running and building up your own business

Posted on May 26, 2019 at 3:06 pm

Running your own business can be exciting but also stressful. You will often not have a guaranteed wage and will have to see through the lows with the highs. You need to be good with money in order to manage your finances effectively and budget accordingly.

Ideally you want to keep building your business up over the coming months and years in order to get more customers and in turn make more money. Always remember than new businesses often take some time to get established and start turning a profit. You may have to invest in your business to set it up initially and may make a loss for the first year or so. This can be hard when you have little or no savings so you should plan carefully about how you are going to pay for day to day living costs during this time.

If you are looking to expand your business you need to be sure that you will be able to cope with the extra work load. You may decide that rather than employing people and having to pay them regardless of how much work you have on. This will allow you out when you need their services although you will need to bear in mind this may mean they are not always available when you need them.

How to perform well in an interview

Posted on March 28, 2019 at 1:29 pm

So you sent off your CV and applied for the job that you have wanted for a while. Then comes the dreaded wait time that you have to endure to find out if you have been successful at the first stage and are going to be invited to attend an interview.

If an employer likes the content on your CV and thinks that you have the skills and qualifications needed to fill the position they will probably invite you in for an interview.

When it comes to interviews you do need to do a certain amount of preparation in order to feel confident and make sure that the interview is a success. If you often feel anxious about interviews then preparing can help to overcome this and make you feel more relaxed which in turn will probably make you come across better during the process.

Simple steps such as re-reading through your CV and ensuring that you can explain anything on there will really help. If there is a gap in your employment for example, then be prepared to be asked about it and have a response ready that will satisfy their concerns.

Planning what to wear for an interview is essential, as panicking about your outfit on the day of the interview will get you flustered and may even make you late, which is never a good start.

Experience or qualifications; which is needed to land that job?

Posted on February 12, 2019 at 1:32 pm

People often wonder which is more important when applying for a job; experience or qualifications.
This often depends on what job you are applying for as some require you to have certain qualifications for you to be allowed to do the job. For example, if you want to be a doctor then qualifications are obviously vital and therefore will be mandatory. If you are looking to becoming a hairdresser then you may do a qualification or you may decide to train on the job and use your experience when applying for other positions. If you are applying for a job based on experience then you may need to be able to prove this by demonstrating that you can do the tasks required.
The ideal candidate for the majority of jobs will have a balance of both but sometimes it is hard to get the experience you need if no one is willing to offer you a position without it. If this is the case you may even consider doing voluntary work for a while to get experience you need to allow you to apply for more jobs and have a better chance of success when you do.

Becoming a private tutor

Posted on January 11, 2019 at 12:25 pm

Private tutoring is often called for when parents cannot or do not want to send their child in to a school. They may want the child to be home schooled and ask that a private tutor come to the home to teach them. Private tutoring may also be used by children who want or need a little extra help with school work or by adults that want to further their education.

As a private tutor it is essential that you have great communication skills, written and oral and good IT skills. You will need to be confident and able to adapt to a way of teaching that works for your individual student.

If you are teaching a child then the parents may have strong views on what they want their child to be able to achieve. This may at times seem a little unrealistic so you need to be able to communicate with the parents in a diplomatic way. They will often want to be updated on the child’s progress and it is vital that you keep adequate notes regarding all of your teachings.

Tutoring can be very rewarding but you are often judged on the results that the pupil achieves. If you are helping a student study for exams, be sure to allow plenty of time to cover all the aspects that are needed.

Should I get a Christmas work contract?

Posted on November 27, 2018 at 9:59 am

Many businesses including retail outlets and supermarkets offer additional Christmas work in the build up to the festive period. Sometimes places that are busier at these times such as restaurants and bars will also offer additional employment opportunities.

Traditionally these are very short-term contracts often starting mid-November and ending in the new year, and they can be quite popular with students for the fact that they can fit it in around term time. It can however be a great employment opportunity for those looking for full time work as if you get on well with the temporary contract you already have a foot in the door do to speak when it comes to being considered for a more permanent role. It also looks good on your CV to have a period employment rather than a gap.

Christmas hours tend to be fairly well paid as the hours can be quite unsociable and could involve you working right through the festive period. If your young and you don’t have family near by it can be a great way to fill up the time and build up a bit of money too so it’s certainly worth considering.

If you are already in employment and you are considering taking on additional work over Christmas then it’s important to remember that you would be taxed on any additional earnings therefore it could work out not so cost effective for you. If in doubt contact HMRC or do an online calculation to see how much tax you would pay.

If you are receiving any benefits or tax credits you would also need to check that these wouldn’t be effected as HMRC will take any income into account when reviewing your entitlement.
